Born in 1838 in Ghyvelde in French Flanders, near Dunkirk, Frédéric, the youngest of the Janssoone family, was chosen by the Lord. He joined the Franciscans and was ordained a priest in 1870.
He spent 10 years in the Holy Land, serving as a custodial vicar and working toward good relations between the different faiths at the holy sites, before settling permanently in Quebec.
His entire life as a missionary and preacher was driven by his desire to make God’s love known to as many people as possible and to increase Marian devotion.
The numerous miracles he performed during his lifetime led him to be regarded as a saint long before his beatification in 1988.
